Safety is #1 on the list for a reason. There is nothing more important than the safety of your baby and it should be your photographers top priority as well. When hiring a newborn photographer make sure they are a licensed and insured business. This protects you, your baby, and the photographer as well. It is also a great idea to look over the photographer’s website to see if they have any type of safety training when it comes to handling newborns. A photographer that specializes in newborn photography should be educated in newborn safety and posing.
Photography isn’t just about the images you will receive at the end but also about the experience the photographer will provide. Make sure you will be comfortable in their studio. Does it look like an inviting and clean environment. Most newborn sessions run around 2 hours so you will want to make sure you don’t mind spending that long in the space. Does the photographer provide an ample amount of information about their process and make you feel well prepared and cared for? Also be sure to look through the photographers portfolio. Are they consistently producing the high quality work you are looking for? Does their style match yours?
We have all heard the expression “you get what you pay for” and that is often the case when it comes to photography. Unless someone is just staring out and building their portfolio they are going to need to charge accordingly for their work. Keep in mind when looking through pricing that any photographer that is running their business legitimately is paying for a business license, insurance, taxes, education, equipment, and more in order to provide a quality service to their clients. While it may be temping to price shop you may end up disappointed with your experience and your images. Newborn photographs are meant to be a treasured keepsake not just some digitals you toss up on facebook a month after they are born then forget about.
